EBay suspension! Why
eBay will suspend your account.BY: Max Cody
OK, so you’ve been
selling on eBay making a good income (or at least some good pocket change). You
are truly trying your best to be a fair eBay user. Now let’s imagine the worse
case scenario; you go to bed after getting all your listings just right; you
have placed some bids on items you are interested in and you even have some bids
in on items you have up on auction. Then you wake-up the next morning and
discover that overnight eBay closed your account, pulling all your listings in
the process. You have just discovered that your eBay account has been suspended.
This happens to more eBayers than you can possibly imagine. So how do you avoid
being suspended by eBay and what are some of the most common reasons for being
suspended.
The first thing you
really need to do (when you get your eBay account) is to familiarize yourself
with all the selling guidelines on eBay; if you do not want to be suspended by
eBay (again). It can be rather tedious and boring and maybe even a bit
over-whelming to figure-out all of eBay?s rules. Not knowing them can easily
earn you another suspension. And the Dreaded eBay suspension is what we are
trying to avoid.
If you think that eBay
needs your revenue as a seller, you are fooling yourself. There are eBay power
sellers who pay in excess of $50,000 per year to eBay in seller’s fees and still
get their accounts suspended. EBay can & will close down or suspend your
account over just 1 serious violation or a number of smaller repeated
offences.
Nevertheless, just
because you follow eBay’s guidelines don’t believe for a second that eBay won’t
suspend you. Your suspension can be instigated by others users on eBay. You’ll
have many competitors on eBay who will try and report you (for anything) and
would be quite happy to get your adds removed or your eBay account suspended.
Even if their accusation is false, your add might still be removed or your eBay
account suspended by an overzealous eBay
employee.
The Definition of an
eBay Suspension: when eBay has made a change to the member's account so as to
prevent the member from bidding on any auctions, listing any new items to sale,
or generally participating within eBay in any way, shape or form; it is
generally said that the eBay member has been suspended. After being suspended
the words "Not a registered user" (NARu) will appear aside the member's ID
wherever it may appear on the eBay
website.
There are many
violations that can get you suspended from eBay. By repeating listing violations
you can easily get a three-day suspension (you can get this temporary suspension
lifted after you take a “tutorial” for what ever rule they claim your broke).
Duplicate listings can get you suspended as well. This occurs when a seller
posts more than 10 listings for identical items. The best way to list the same
type of items is through a Multiple Item listings, an eBay's Storefront or A
Fixed-Price format. Although there are some viable reasons to list multiple
identical items all at once; to allow a single seller to list an over-whelming
amount of identical items at one time can hurt the buying experience and the
level “selling field” of others. If a seller lists in more than one category,
the categories must be relevant. Any additional identical listings will be ended
by eBay. Duplicate these violations once too often and you will definitely get a
temporary suspension and continued will ultimately lead to a permanent
suspension from eBay.
There are still other
minor potential hazards that may jeopardize your account stability or even earn
you that permanent suspension status fro eBay. Negative feedback can very easily
cause your eBay account to be suspended. You may want to abandon your eBay
account altogether and start afresh if you get too much negative feedback. Many,
many users get suspended because of negative feedback. Though the suspension is
not automatic and usually needs an extra push from a disgruntled buyer in the
form of a complaint. If you feel that your reputation or the account is so
valuable as to keep, then it may be worth buying a few low priced items to just
get your feedback to the required “safe” level so as to avert an immanent
suspension.
Other situations that
can get eBay to turn on you (regardless if you are at fault you can still have
your eBay account suspended).
You can be suspended if
your account is hi-jacked.
Even forgetting your
account password (too often) could cause massive delays to your business or even
get you a temporary suspension.
If you have multiple
accounts but use the same eMail address for them, one or all of your eBay
accounts could be suspended
permanently.
NO KIDS ALLOWED:
eBay
requires that all users be at least 18 years of age. This IS an automatic
suspension no questions asked; are there
ever?
NON-PAYING BIDDER: Winning bidders or
buyers who fail to follow through with the transaction face consequences receive
two warnings from eBay before they are suspended. Continue being a non-paying
bidder and you will receive an everlasting suspension from
eBay.
NON-PERFORMING SELLERS: There are more
suspensions given to non-performing sellers then all the other suspensions added
up: Significantly misrepresenting an item by not meeting the terms and item
description in the listing, or failing to deliver an item for which you accepted
payment, is a violation of eBay policies. Besides being suspended by eBay, it
may also be considered criminal fraud.
PROHIBITED AND RESTRICTED ITEMS:
As an eBay user, you are ultimately responsible for making
sure that the items you sell on eBay are legal according to all applicable
jurisdictions and permitted by eBay policies In many cases it only takes once
offence to be suspended, other times you will receive a warning with a three-day
suspension. This is the second largest group of eBayers that receive permanent
suspensions.
SOLICITING OFF-SITE SALES
(if eBay has a favorite reason for giving a suspension this would be it):
You may not circumvent eBay fees by using contact information obtained from eBay
or any eBay service to complete a sale outside of eBay. Ebay has “trolls” that
are searching for this illegal activity and ready to instantly suspend all of
whom they find.<
PROFANITY:
The use of
language that is racist, hateful, sexual or obscene in nature in a public area
is prohibited and will quickly get you an eBay suspension. Suspend the language
or eBay will suspend your account.
THREATS:
EBay policies
prohibit making threats of physical harm to another user. This is probably the
best reason for eBay to suspend someone. I’d threaten to suspend them
too.
FEE AVOIDANCE: Fee
avoidance is the practice of listing or carrying out auctions in such a way as
to avoid having to pay eBay sellers' fees. Fee avoidance is a violation of eBay
rules. Obviously eBay is going to suspend you if you don’t let them get their
money. This is an easy fix; pay your fees and avoid a
suspension.
SHILL BIDDING:
Most of
us know that you can and will get suspended from eBay for bidding on your own
auctions. But did you know that if eBay discovers your friends or family are
bidding on them you can also get suspended. It may sound unfair, but this is
even a Law whereas other auctions are concerned online or out in the real world.
Acquaintances have too much advantage over average bidders. For this reason;
eBay will suspend you if you know your
bidders.
KEYWORD SPAMMING:
Though using terms that indirectly relate to your item is not necessarily wrong,
it still can be construed as breaking the rules and done often enough can at
least get you a warning and a three-day
suspension.
UNWELCOME OR UNWANTED BIDDING:
Not a serious offence by any means. Simply put; this is the act of
placing bids when you do not qualify (you live in a the wrong country, not
enough feedback earned, don’t have a PayPal account etc.). This normally is not
an offence that you can get suspended for; however become habitual with it and
they will.
BID RETRACTION: This
one is a little strange. It is against the general rules of eBay but is
permissible under certain restrictions and guidelines. However any bid
retraction is just cause for an investigation by eBay. Let just one other thing
be out of place with your account and you can count on an unretractable
suspension coming your way.
STEALING PHOTOS FROM OTHER EBAYERS:
Not only does this violate eBay rules (which can get your account
suspended temporarily or even banned forever if you tend to do it repeatedly),
but more to the point, copyright infringement is a crime all by itself in most
places on the world. In short, you can be sued in civil court for compensation
if another seller finds you using his or her image on your auction listing;
which would make the suspension seem a bit less important then. So don't do
it.
For serious or repeated
violations of eBay rules, a user may be indefinitely suspended. Though
indefinitely suspended users may be reinstated by eBay at its discretion, eBay
also has the right to determine at any time that the suspension is
permanent.
If you are suspended
from selling eBay guidelines states the
following:
"Members who are
suspended are prohibited from registering new accounts with eBay, or bidding or
selling on eBay using any existing accounts. EBay reserves the right to suspend
existing accounts as well as new accounts opened by anyone in the same household
of a suspended user or by any other associates of a suspended
user."
According to eBay’s own
written rules, just being associated to a suspended eBay user (or suspended eBay
account) can get you suspended. So all of your accounts that share “account
information” will be suspended. Your mother’s account can be suspended when you
get your Section 8 or 9 Suspension. If you are using your friend’s address
(which he uses on his eBay account), he will receive a suspension also. As soon
as your sister, who lives with you tries to open an eBay account; hers will be
suspended in less than 24 hours.
In many suspension
cases, one suspension leads to another suspension. Is it any wonder that there
are thousands of suspensions a month from
eBay.
When an eBay member is
suspended, eBay provides via email instructions to that user for becoming
unsuspended (normally faxing or mailing in numerous pieces of verifiable
personal information) if it is possible to bring the account into good standing
at all. For some types of rule violations, suspension is
permanent.
It should also be noted
that eBay also maintains meticulous records about all of its past and present
members, including cross-checks against names, addresses, and phone numbers, IP
addresses etc., meaning that once a member has been suspended, they cannot
simply open a new account and resume trading unless they have access to new
untraceable information, legal or
otherwise.
Another point and fact:
EBay members who have begun a transaction with another eBay member that later
became suspended are relieved of their obligation to complete the transaction.
Bids (including winning bids) become non-binding when a seller is suspended, and
the agreement to accept payment and ship is void once a buyer is
suspended.
